UL-142 Emergency Fuel Storage Within Tight Hospital Footprint

A hospital in Pennsylvania required 28,000 gallons of backup generator fuel storage within a highly constrained site footprint. Traditional cylindrical tanks were not feasible due to space limitations, requiring a vertically optimized solution that maintained full compliance with aboveground fuel storage standards.

Working in coordination with an engineering and construction firm specializing in environmental protection and restoration, Modern Welding Company fabricated a UL-142-listed rectangular steel tank measuring 9 feet wide by 14 feet tall by 30 feet long.As the only manufacturer licensed to produce a shop-fabricated UL-142 rectangular tank exceeding 103 inches in height (up to 14 feet tall), Modern was able to deliver the required storage capacity within a compact footprint.

The tank included a 36-inch manway along with an integrated ladder and guardrail system for safe inspection and maintenance. The completed installation provides reliable bulk diesel storage for emergency power while demonstrating the strength, durability, and space efficiency of a vertically engineered rectangular steel tank solution.
